A large number of Black and Ethnic Minority people work in the NHS and care sectors of Scotland. Our project's goal is to capture the stories of black care workers and document their contribution to Scotland's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Black people's social, economic and historic contributions normally go unrecognized. This project will ensure that we can capture for posterity black people's selfless and direct contribution to a most important time in Scotland. This project will help change society’s perceptions of the Scottish black community, bridging the gap of understanding by sharing positive stories of black people in Scotland.
We will produce a documentary that captures all of the care workers’ stories into a single narrative and national archive. The Scotland - Who Cares? documentary and booklet will be made available on our website, national poetry library and national libraries as a permanent record of the contribution of black carers to Scotland's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to ensure that audiences worldwide and future generations are able to access this important piece of Scottish history.
Very few platforms are available for Scotland’s black community’s stories to be told. As a result of this, very few cultural productions are created by them and with them in mind. This project will break the silence that has pervaded Scottish society for generations and provide a critical platform for black carers to raise their voice and be heard by wider Scottish society about their crucial contribution during one of the most life-altering periods in modern history.
